The construction of the Real Monasterio de Santa María de El Paular began on August 29, 1390, when Juan I, King of Castilla, laid the foundation stone for the future Cartuja, the first in the kingdom of Castilla and the sixth in Spain.

The Monasterio de El Paular is located in the incomparable geographical setting of the Lozoya Valley, which forms an imposing natural amphitheater on a plateau of 1.159 meters of high, surrounded by the magnificent peaks of the Sierra de Guadarrama, two kilometers from Rascafría (Madrid).

This architectural complex has been evolving and growing over the years to become what we know today: a monument mixed with different styles (Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance and Flemish), half monastery of Benedictine monks and half hotel (Sheraton Santa María de El Paular).
